How tea bag filter rolls are made

Six steps take the filter material from raw polymer to a tagged roll ready for your tea bag machine.

  1. Raw material

PLA and other raw materials are mainly sourced in China, with Japanese raw materials available for some grades.

  2. Weaving

The filter mesh is woven on dedicated looms. Tea bag mesh is lighter than industrial filter and printing mesh and is woven for that purpose.

  3. Heat-setting and slitting

The mesh is heat-set to stabilise it and slit into narrow rolls at the exact roll width.

  4. String and tag welding

On automatic tagging lines the string is welded to the printed tag, then tag and string are welded to the mesh by ultrasonic. One line runs at about 70 tags per minute.

  5. Liner and rewinding

A white paper liner strip is wound in to keep the roll tight and well formed, then the finished roll is rewound. Export rolls include the liner as standard.

  6. Packing

Rolls are packed in export cartons on pallets. Wooden cases can be added on request.

PITCH ROLLWIDTH TAGstring

At about 70 tags per minute, a standard 6,000-tag roll is finished on one line in under two hours.
